There is nothing more exhilarating than watching a big bull dolphin racing for your bait. It is, without a doubt, my favorite fish to catch. I guess because it allows us as a captain to really take part in the success of finding these fish.
Already, the big dolphins have shown up off Islamorada. Just in the last few trips out of Robbie’s Marina, the “DirtyBoat” has put some outstanding catches on the dock. The Dolphin fishing season is on!
Dolphin ranging from 20 to 40 lbs hasn’t been uncommon, along with some nice Wahoo caught under floating debris. The strong east winds this spring will push some of the largest Mahi-mahi of the year into our waters from the Bahamas. The largest Mahi-mahi in state history was caught off the east coast of Florida. So this is, without a doubt, the time to catch that trophy size bull dolphin.
The easterly wind direction has also pushed the warm waters of the Gulf Stream close to the reef as well. And a good Gulf Stream current puts the dolphin into an all-out feeding frenzy. There is nothing more exciting than watching frigate birds work a school of large slammer dolphins feeding on a school of flying fish. As we all know, flying fish is one of the dolphin’s favorite foods, especially in the spring when they are found in big numbers.
All the captains out of Robbie’s Marina love to catch Mahi-mahi. They are, without a doubt, the best charter species found. There is nothing cooler than seeing a large school of these beautiful fish in a feeding frenzy at the back of your boat. It is not uncommon for every angler to be hooked up all at the same time. I like to call it a Chinese fire drill. They are also very acrobatic, as well as one of the most colorful and beautiful fish found anywhere in the world. So don’t forget to bring your camera — you might just catch that amazing shot.
